The scales in this book are based on the scale requirements for Associated Board Graded exams, Grades 1-5, but the book will be of benefit to any player who wishes to improve their playing!
Unfortunately, playing straight octave or two octave scales will only be of minor benefit to your overall playing, afterall, these requirements with either all tongued or all slurred patterns with plain rhythms are somewhat removed from the realities of playing pieces.
Pieces demand a rich tapestry of skills from the player such as the ability to play various rhythms, articulations, and dynamics. Pieces require the ability to play neat fast passages of notes with good finger and tongue coordination, and play slowly with good tone and breath control. Phew, that's a lot!
So, practising these skills as often as you can is what will benefit your technique over time, and there's no reason why you can't start working on these skills when in the lower grades. This book introduces elements of advanced practice techniques, such as playing scales with rhythms and articulations from as early as Grade 1! You'll be getting of to the best start on your flute journey by establishing a focus on your technique with this book in your practice room.
